The project for Montanelli Square originated from three distinctive elements that have guided it towards to realisation: Stone, Water and Vegetation. Previously the square was an expanse of asphalt without identity, used only for commercial purposes or events. The new square, instead, tries to encourage socialisation among citizens by giving them a space that had been missing until recently: a square that is a place of community and identity, where they can come together. Located on an irregular parcel in terms of geometry and slope, the new square looks like a “carpet” of stone laid out.The texture of the stone is regulated and rhythmised by corten steel recourses which at the same time are used to collect water and provide lighting, animating the square with a careful play of light. On the sides of the square – regularised in shape – two rows of trees have been planted, under which there are gathering places with various types of street furniture. In addition to the play of light and materials, the square is animated by a fountain on the ground which will be managed by the administration for parties and events.
